Barbecue Sauce

Susan Priestman of Pickering sent her mother's barbecue sauce recipe, a spicy version good with chicken and ribs. Maureen Birtles-Paton of Brampton sent in a recipe with similar flavourings, but using 1/2 to 3/4 cup ketchup instead of the tomato soup and water; she simmers it just 5 to 8 minutes.

 

1 medium onion, chopped

10 oz (284 mL) can tomato soup

1 cup water

3 tbsp each: vinegar, Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp each: salt, paprika, chili powder

1/2 tsp pepper

1/4 tsp cinnamon

Pinch ground cloves

In saucepan, combine all ingredients. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 30 minutes. Cool and pour into a clean jar. Refrigerate.

Makes about 2 1/2 cups.
